An overview of therapy for child sexual abuse

In this post, I will list more of the therapies available for child sexual abuse (CSA). Please note I am not a doctor and please see your doctor for actual medical advice and more options as I am not skilled enough to list all options for therapy of CSA.

Non-recommended therapies

These therapies are absolutely dangerous. Beware of them and stay away.

Recovered Memory Therapy (RMT)

This “therapy” induces false memories. Ever heard of the conspiracy theories of satanic ritual abuse and UFO abductions? Guess what caused them? RMT and hypnosis. According to practitioners of RMT, victims of CSA suppress memories of the abuse and RMT is required to recover those memories. Ignore this and run away as quick as possible from RMT therapists.

Astrotherapy uses astrology to guide healing. Look, the zodiac may be fun to use as a personality test but is not therapy material. Astrology is not proven and even has been debunked several times over. It’s fine to use astrology as a fun guide but please do not trust it with your mental health.

Hypnosis is not all junk science however it can induce false memories. This is why you must be careful in your choice of hypnotherapist. However due to the existence of better therapies for CSA, I would advice you to forego hypnotherapy for safer therapies.

Attachment Therapy

Please not do use this therapy, it kills. Similar to RMT, as it claims that some children are suffering from being in a satanic cult and that they have repressed memories. Ignore and run away.

Recommended Therapies

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a proven therapy that is effective for many mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Backed up by studies, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, this is one of the most well supported psychotherapies available.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an approach of CBT that is designed to help  “children, adolescents, and their caregivers overcome trauma-related difficulties.”
